Wabi-Sabi

Wabi Sabi

Wabi-Sabi is the latest interior design trend. But what is it?

Apparently it’s an ancient Japanese aesthetic that sees beauty in nature, simplicity, imperfection and impermanence. Wabi is a spiritual path to simplicity and solitude whilst Sabi is a natural process through age resulting in objects that are irregular, unpretentious and impermanent. Isn’t Wabi-Sabi therefore the new name for minimalism?..

DIY Project Diary - Week 9

In the world of home improvement things always take longer than anticipated. No wonder builders never finish projects on time - why, knowing this, can’t they be realistic and allow for extra time when they give their estimates?..

DIY & Home Makeover TV shows

Filed under: Interior Design — DO or DIY @ 3:08 pm

During the last decade DIY home improvement shows, interior design makeovers and relocating & property developing programmes have been flooding our TV sets. We either love them or hate them - but either way, they have affected our lives and our perception of home improvement & decoration. Most of us want to live in magazine-style homes and we think we can achieve this with just a little imagination and small amount of money.  Apparently, these days, ‘everybody is an interior designer.’ Most of us are confident that we are able to design, decorate, renovate and develop properties - with little experience or knowledge  - within a short period of time..

DIY Project Diary - Week 8

We really should have bought a bench saw.  Having cut 3 MDF sheets we’ve realised that doing it with a circular saw just doesn’t work properly because the MDF is only 6mm thick and 2.4m long! I got bored with cutting all these strips and wasting more material - I just wanted a builder’s merchant to do it for me. We’ve called around and eventually found a company nearby who would do it for a small fee, if we bought the material from them. I calculated that we needed another three sheets – at least. We needed to cover all walls, head board, cabinets, the lids of the boxes, the eaves around the window..

DIY Project Diary - Week 7

Not much progress this week. We demolished the useless built in cabinet between the bedroom and hall - it opened up the whole floor. This cabinet was built like a mini-room – it had proper stud-partition walls – with insulation and everything. No wonder there was no space left inside it for anything much!..

New regulations re Electrical DIY

Filed under: Electrical DIY — DO or DIY @ 5:51 pm

On the 1st Jan this year new UK building regulations were introduced regarding electrical work carried out in the home. The aim of these rules is to protect people from cowboy builders and bad electrical workmanship - also to limit electrical DIY work done by amateurs. Those who don’t comply with the new regulation could be prosecuted and fined up to £5000. There are also implications as to insurance should anything happen to you or your home..
