Week 26 -  Finishing Kitchen

At last the doors arrived from IKEA  - but not the solid beech worktop. We called them and they told us that we’d have to wait for another six weeks. This is absurd. We’ve been waiting for it for over three months! I was not prepared to wait for another six weeks. So we got into the car and off we drove to IKEA..

DIY Project - week 25

Kitchen remodeling

This week I finished the painting. I had to use at least three coats of paint of the emulsion that supposedly only needs one coat. The old yellow paint kept showing through, not to mention the marks of the ex-dado-rail. I now think that the whole walls should have been plastered, not just over the dados & skirting. There is one lesson to be learnt here: never glue dado or picture rail onto plasterboard!..

Week 24

Last week was productive - at last. No more builders around so it’s really up to us what gets done and what doesn’t. Anyway, we really got on with it. We installed the hood and boxed in the halogen lights  above the work surface. The main work surface hasn’t arrived yet - it will come with the units’ doors in a couple of weeks. But we got the thinner worktop, made of solid beech, which we cut up and covered the recesses or zones.  We’ve also put lighting into these areas..

Kitchen Decor

Filed under: Kitchen — DO or DIY @ 2:50 pm

Having thought through your design you must consider the kitchen decor - i.e. the style, the color scheme, the furnishing. You should always opt for a style that goes with the rest of your interior. Many people make the mistake of putting an overtly high-tech kitchen into a cottage or a rustically decorated home. This is wrong.  If your home is decorated in country style - your kitchen should also fit in with this decor. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have modern kitchen appliances or you have to have cheesy furnishing - there is always a contemporary take on the "country style". Or choose the timeless Shaker style that seems to fit most interior decorating styles..

Small kitchen remodeling

I have talked about the basic principles of kitchen design and the factors that determine the final result - just to remind you: budget, space & time. However, when you have a small kitchen, remodeling is mainly space determined, which means you have to be clever with design.

Small kitchens are actually more time-consuming than big kitchens -not just on a conceptual level - but on a practical level too. Everything has to match, fit and work out spatially - whilst bigger layouts are more forgiving of mistakes and inaccuracies..

Week 23 - Kitchen Fitting

Although we worked all day every day last week - it looks like very little has been done.

Moving the timer and control switches for the boiler was a tedious and fiddly job - just as we thought it would be. It took a whole day to sort it out. We plugged in all the appliances - except the chimney hood, which is this week’s task. We’ll need to build a box to hide the extractor outlet pipe. This will need to run from the centre of the wall (above where the cooker is) along to a hole we’ve got to make through the outside wall. We’ve decided to make a feature of this necessity so we’ll also continue it to a similar distance to the other side -  this will then be a convenient place to install 3 halogen lights on either side to provide lighting for the work-top..
