Saving money at Christmas

Filed under: Festivities — admin @ 8:38 pm

As I wrote in the previous article about Christmas preparation, making your own Christmas decorations is not only eco-friendly and individual - but also a money saving exercise.

Yes, you can save lots of money by doing lots of things yourself. For example, you can make your own Xmas card – make an ecard version and email this to those who are online (most likely you’ll only need to post a dozen by snail mail). You’ll save money and you’ll be kind to the environment..

planning

Filed under: General — admin @ 9:20 pm

August is the month of vacation. You might have noticed that we have not written on the DIY Together blog since May. No, we haven’t been on vacation since then, but have been rather busy with our sister sites. Also, two of us have had a baby and been on maternity leave. So expect lots of DIY, decorating and design advice re baby rooms in the future!
But to get back to August - it’s a good time to look around your home and assess the situation. Do any of your rooms need remodelling? Does anything need to be repaired, redecorated or just freshened up?  Yes?..

Baby taggie

Filed under: DIY Crafts — admin @ 11:49 am

Taggies are loved by babies because they enjoy rubbing the satin edges of the tags. Also toddlers can find them to be great comforters.

However, you can pay up to 30 dollars for them, yet they are so simple to make!

You just need two pieces of soft fabric - such as fleece, cotton, silk, velour or velvet and a few different ribbons. Make sure that the ribbons have a variety of different prints or textures. Also, use visually stimulating patterns and fabric..

Vegetables to grow

Filed under: Gardening — admin @ 5:05 pm

As we discussed in the previous post, growing vegetables can be a very satisfying experience. Now you know the basics, the question that remains is:  -  what to grow???

Don’t bother with vegetables that you can get easily and cheaply from a supermarket or the farmers’market, such as standard potatoes or onions, or vegetables that are too fussy and attract pests or diseases.

These are the best vegetables to start with:..

Grow your own vegetables

Filed under: Gardening — admin @ 12:20 pm

More and more of us want to eat healthy, organic vegetables. Unfortunately the industrialised “organic” production of vegetables is not as pure as it should be, so the only way to make sure your vegetable are truly fresh and organic is to grow them yourself! Also, it is very satisfying to watch your meals grow in your own garden!

However, you should really think about what to grow. It’s really not worth growing things that you can get really cheaply at a market, such as normal potatoes and onions, particularly if you don’t have a big garden.  Instead opt for gourmet crops such as shallots, beans, new potatoes, peas, chards, spinach and lettuces..
