Bathroom cleaner

Mix 1 ½ cups of bicarbonate of soda with 1 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and 1 drop of lavender, lemon or tea tree essential oil. Use this solution as your general detergent..

Toilet

To freshen up your loo, pour in one cup of white vinegar or lemon juice, let stand for five minutes and flush. For a badly stained toilet pour down cola and leave it overnight. To prevent blockages and neutralise odours, flush down some soda crystals dissolved in hot water. For removing limescale, sprinkle the crystals around the bowl and leave overnight. You can also use Borax to freshen up or deodorise the toilet bowl – sprinkle 1/2 cup of Borax into the bowl, then leave it for 30 minutes or so.

Baths, basins and showers

For a general clean use the above mentioned bathroom cleaner. For more serious grease and limescale, use soda crystals, but do not use them on lacquered finishes & fittings. For a quick freshening-up, just squeeze 1/2 a lemon over the surface. A shower curtain can be cleaned by scrubbing it with some bicarbonate of soda paste – mildew can be removed by washing it in a solution of soda crystals in hot water.

Drains

Use soda crystals weekly to flush out drains – the waste pipes will be kept clean and fresh and blockages will be cleared or prevented. To neutralise odors of your bathroom drains, pour half a cup of bicarbonate of soda down the drain while running warm tap water.

Floors and tiles

Clean ceramic and vinyl bathroom floors & ceramic wall tiles with a dissolved soda crystals solution.  This will freshen up the grouting too. Remove dirt and grime from tiles with a bicarbonate of soda paste.
