Filed under: Gardening — DO or DIY @ 5:05 pm

As we discussed in the previous post, growing vegetables can be a very satisfying experience. Now you know the basics, the question that remains is:  -  what to grow???

Don’t bother with vegetables that you can get easily and cheaply from a supermarket or the farmers’market, such as standard potatoes or onions, or vegetables that are too fussy and attract pests or diseases.

These are the best vegetables to start with:..

Grow your own vegetables

Filed under: Gardening — DO or DIY @ 12:20 pm

More and more of us want to eat healthy, organic vegetables. Unfortunately the industrialised “organic” production of vegetables is not as pure as it should be, so the only way to make sure your vegetable are truly fresh and organic is to grow them yourself! Also, it is very satisfying to watch your meals grow in your own garden!

However, you should really think about what to grow. It’s really not worth growing things that you can get really cheaply at a market, such as normal potatoes and onions, particularly if you don’t have a big garden.  Instead opt for gourmet crops such as shallots, beans, new potatoes, peas, chards, spinach and lettuces..

DIY or DFY

Filed under: Home Improvement, Uncategorized — DO or DIY @ 2:24 pm

Apparently DIY stores are in trouble - their sales have been going down for a year now. It seems that more and more people are getting tradesmen in to do their home improvement rather than doing it themselves. Done For You is now replacing DIY, so much so, that even the large home improvement stores have started to offer installation and handyman services.

Interior Decor trends

Filed under: Home Decorating, Uncategorized — DO or DIY @ 8:51 pm

If you want to remodel or redecorate your home this year, it’s time to start thinking about what you want, what you like and what you dislike. If you go to your local home stores, you might find it overwhelming because almost every interior style is catered for - so which one to choose?

First of all, decide whether you want a timeless or a trendy home. Timeless means that it is unaffected by the latest design trends, or it’s an ideal canvas for updating a space when needed. You should only remodel your home to the latest trend, if you want to move soon or are prepared to redecorate in five years or so. It is much more sensible to create a neutral or natural canvas and use trendy accessories and details.

New Year DIY resolutions

Filed under: Easy DIY, General, Home Decorating, Uncategorized — DO or DIY @ 6:29 pm

Firstly, all of us at DIY Together would like to wish all our readers and members a very Happy New Year!

Secondly, we’d like to remind you that today is the day to remove your Christmas decorations - according to tradition anyway. Some people like to leave the colourful lights up for another couple weeks in order to brighten up their evenings. As long as your lights are not obviously Christmassy, this should be fine. Alternatively just add a few shiny or metallic objects to your interior and light a few candles to create a cosy mood in dull evenings.

Eco Christmas

Filed under: Festivities — DO or DIY @ 7:22 pm

Last year we wrote about being green at Christmas. As last year has shown us yet again, we’ll need to adjust our lifestyle in order to save energy consumption and natural sources, if we want our planet to survive.

However it’s still not easy to have an eco-friendly Christmas, given that this festival has come to represent self-indulgence and excess consumption of food & drink. How can we be joyful when worried about every detail of what we do, use and buy?

Firstly, don’t over do it. As the cliché says every little bit helps
Here are a few useful tips that are simple yet saves materials, energy and money..

Trendy Christmas decoration

Filed under: Festivities — DO or DIY @ 5:53 pm

Perhaps you’ve already read our article about the latest Christmas decorating trend. Although this article was written last year, most of it still applies this year. The trend is still to create the feeling of glamour and luxury by using shiny, smooth, fluffy and silky detailing.

Black is still the dominant color. You can pair it with red, plum, silver, gold, bronze, turquoise or pink. This year’s pink is no longer fuchsia but a more subtle powder, or rose, pink. Supplement your two chosen colors with transparent glass or plastic and lots of reflective mirrors.

Christmas Decorating with white

Filed under: Festivities — DO or DIY @ 3:46 pm

As we wrote previously in our article about White Christmas Decoration, this theme can be executed in a modern or classic way. It’s a beautiful scheme that can be combined with the elegant or trendy themes. This post is to show how to achieve the look.

White can be cold and frosty - but these qualities are perfect to create a Christmassy feel. You just have to be careful to use textures and textiles that can add some warmth - for example mix frosty glass baubles with fluffy ones, such as these:
