Spring DIY solutions

OK, the yearly spring DIY can be a hassle. But we shouldn’t have to redecorate every year. If you cleverly decide on the background you’ll only need to change or add new accessories. The background (i.e. the floor and walls) is what we call in design the”canvas”.  A successful interior is about layering. Think of it as a painting. The room (or space) is the canvas, the furniture, fittings and accessories make the picture – the layout, the theme, the colours come from the composition of these details..

So don’t use strong colours (or any colours actually) on your wall  – keep it light and off-white. I know – it’s boring. But you’ll add colour and texture later. Choose an eggshell or acrylic finish – this sort of paint covers well and can be wiped. Also, it reflects light – so your room will look bigger and brighter. Wallpapers are back – but don’t use them, not on walls anyway. Don’t you remember how hard it was to remove it in the first place? If you want the wallpaper look – put it into big (or many small) frames and hang them to create a feature wall. This solution could cover previous imperfections as well…

Then choose timeless basic furniture – i.e. don’t go for fashionable tables, chairs and sofas – choose something that would fit into many different styles and trends. So don’t buy a retro table or sofa – retro is fashionable now but will be naff again in two years. Keep furniture simple and comfortable – again, choose colours that would go with many themes.

Then add throws, cushions, rugs, picture frames etc. These can represent the latest trend. So go wild. Do your retail therapy – or start making things yourself. Making a cushion cover takes only ½ hour. So think about how much the cushions you fancy cost … and how many you could make for the same amount of money.

Also, pay attention to details. Candles, door handles, knobs and flowers can create the wow factor. You can allocate vases, lamps and candles for seasonal decoration – these can instantly freshen up your rooms.

I’ll be back with more suggestions as to how to update an interior quickly and stylishly in order to avoid or at least shorten the yearly spring clean & DIY experience .
