Valentine’s Day Decoration

It seems that the novelty of buying romantic gifts for your loved one or taking them to a nice restaurant/ hotel on Valentine’s day has worn off. The latest trend seems to be decorating his/her home and spend the night in. emoticon

So where do you start?..   emoticon

First, think about the interior you are to decorate and decide on a suitable decorating theme. Then think about your budget, then your time. You can actually do an effective decoration pretty quickly if you put your mind to it.

Here are a few ideas for themes:

Traditional

Color

The traditional color scheme is red & pink. Decorate the place with hearts, hearts and even more hearts. You can either buy or make red or pink hearts and hang them in the windows, from the mantelpiece, from the picture rail, from the ceiling (above the bed is a good place!!!). emoticon Alternatively use balloons. Materials should be shiny & smooth – think glitter, velvet & silk.

Flowers

Red roses work well with this look. Make wreaths (heart shaped obviously) and flower arrangements in large vases or bowls. Scatter rose petals around the bedroom, the dining table, in a pre-run bath etc. Make some displays in glass bowls – add some water, floating candles and rose petals.

Lighting

Lighting should be subdued. Decorate the mantel piece or wrap your bed frame with it heart-shaped string lights. Alternatively, change the light bulbs (globes) in a couple of low level lamps to red ones – the affect is amazing! If you can’t dim or change the color of your lighting, just use candles  – get lots of red, heart-shaped or scented ones. Pile them up in the fireplace, in large vessels, on the mantel etc…

Table Decoration

If you’re staying in for dinner, cook something simple that can be displayed beautifully.  Cover the table with a large piece of silk or velvet, make a central piece to complement your theme – red candles, rose petals, berries, candies etc.
Don’t forget the Champagne and the chocolates!

If you find this traditional theme too girly, why don’t you try out the trendy or romantic decorating themes for Valentine’s Day?
