Polished Concrete Floor

Polished Concrete Floor

Polished concrete is the one of the must materials to use in a modern interior. Yet it’s a very old finish, the Romans used it extensively. It is an ideal choice for creating a sensual and seamless floor, particularly if you want to connect an inside space with an outer space. Finishes vary from high gloss smooth to ridged and textured – also you can add glass, cobbles, pebbles etc. Chemical stains can also be added to create the desired color. If you decide on concrete flooring indoors, install underfloor heating for a warm and sensual feel beneath your feet!..

A concrete floor is created by laying a fine concrete mix on top of a heavy subfloor. Although the subfloor could be wood, it’s not advisable – it’s best to have a solid concrete base.  A standard concrete mix should not be used as the top layer because it has sharp sand in it which cannot be polished. You can use bleached cement in the concrete mix for a light finish. The best polished concrete floor is Concrete Terazzo, which is made from ground marble dust. You must remember to include expansion joints, otherwise the floor will crack over time.

After laying and allowing time for full drying, the floor then is ready to be polished. This needs heavy-duty polishing equipment and has to be done by a professional. Opt for a gloss finish – it’s gorgeous! Then the floor has to be sealed with Lithofin or similar chemical.

There are a few disadvantages to concrete floors. The manufacturing process is not very environmentally friendly – although improvements have been made recently. You have to consider the acoustics (concrete echoes) – and, unless you have underfloor heating, it’s quite a cold surface to walk on. Also, it stains easily if grease is not cleaned up immediately. Some people find concrete floors too industrial and harsh looking. In fact, it’s one of those things that you either love or hate.
