DIY Tips DIY Stores Best Buys DIY Review DIY Market DIY Network

January 6, 2007

Firstly, all of us at DIY Together would like to wish all our readers and members a very Happy New Year!

Secondly, we’d like to remind you that today is the day to remove your Christmas decorations - according to tradition anyway. Some people like to leave the colourful lights up for another couple weeks in order to brighten up their evenings. As long as your lights are not obviously Christmassy, this should be fine. Alternatively just add a few shiny or metallic objects to your interior and light a few candles to create a cosy mood in dull evenings.

Casting stepping stones

Filed under: Easy DIY, Gardening, Outdoor — admin @ 11:41 am

Stepping stones can be less obtrusive and more interesting than solid pathways. Not to mention that they are much cheaper to lay - particularly if you want to create a long path to somewhere. So instead of laying a solid pathway, just set a few stepping stones along the track.
Why don’t you make these stepping stones even more interesting by making them yourself? It’s simple and easy - you just need a mould & some concrete. Concrete is cheap, easy to mix and very durable. However, it’s quite heavy so don’t make large pieces..

Fixings

Filed under: Easy DIY — admin @ 11:15 am

If you’re not sure which fixings to use for certain jobs, this guide could come very handy to you.

There are flat head, round head and countersink screws. Cross head -Phillips or Posidrive - screws are now the most common and the easiest to work with but there are also a lot of single slotted screws about so you will need a good selection of different size and type screwdrivers. Flat & round heads are exactly what their names imply. You “countersink” for a screw if you want it to be flush with or below the surface when screwed in - to do this you can use a special countersink bit or drill a shallow hole with a large drill bit.

Ready for Spring DIY?

Filed under: DIY Home Repair, Easy DIY, Housekeeping — admin @ 3:54 pm

It’s spring again, and the DIY season has begun. It’s the ideal time to freshen-up our homes, repair household items, fix broken appliances & fittings or redecorate some spaces.

The best way to get everything done by the Summer is to get properly organised. Get a notepad and a pen and look around your home – room by room. Write down the things that need to be cleaned, rearranged, fixed or revamped. Then go outside and inspect the windows, doors, pathways, gates, courtyard or garden. Again, write down what needs to be done..

Spring DIY solutions

Filed under: Easy DIY, Home Decorating — admin @ 2:57 pm

OK, the yearly spring DIY can be a hassle. But we shouldn’t have to redecorate every year. If you cleverly decide on the background you’ll only need to change or add new accessories. The background (i.e. the floor and walls) is what we call in design the”canvas”.  A successful interior is about layering. Think of it as a painting. The room (or space) is the canvas, the furniture, fittings and accessories make the picture – the layout, the theme, the colours come from the composition of these details..
